Police in Terengganu, Malaysia, in coordination with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), dismantled a bitcoin mining syndicate illegally siphoning electricity in Hulu Terengganu and Marang. The joint raid, dubbed “Op Letrik,” uncovered 45 mining machines worth RM225,000 and revealed monthly power theft losses of RM36,000. No arrests were made, but authorities are pursuing those behind the illicit operation.

Cryptocurrency miner Diversified Energy has quietly exited a natural gas-powered mining site in Elk County, Pennsylvania, raising environmental concerns. According to the Erie Times-News, the company launched operations at the Longhorn Pad A site in 2022 without an air quality permit, later obtained in December 2023. A March 2025 inspection found the site cleared of crypto mining equipment, prompting a violation notice from the DEP for well abandonment. Diversified denies the site was abandoned, claiming gas production may resume.

Bitcoin mining firm Phoenix Group has boosted its Ethiopian operations by adding 52 megawatts (MW) of capacity, bringing its total in the country to 132 MW. The firm now reports over 500 MW in global mining capacity. CEO Munaf Ali said the company focuses on locations with abundant, low-cost energy, calling the Ethiopia expansion a key step in strengthening its global position.

Officials warned that mining activities place heavy pressure on the country’s electricity infrastructure, leading to power outages and disruptions to essential services across residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
